  • What's the relationship between CUHK and CUHK-Shenzhen?

    Operating under a "one brand, two campuses" philosophy, CUHK-Shenzhen follows the same rigorous academic and teaching standards for which The Chinese University of Hong Kong is renowned. The graduates of CHUK-Shenzhen will get a degree certification from CUHK.

  • What is the difference between the Master of Science in Economics programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and other schools?

    Unlike traditional economics master's programmes, this programme is taught entirely in English* and consists of three major branches: Macro-Finance, Economic Science and Economic Data Science, tailored to meet students’ different interests and career development needs. The programme's curriculum skillfully blends economic theory with data science applications, creating an integrated learning experience that enriches students' knowledge and enhances their practical skills.

  • How to apply for this programme?

    CUHK-Shenzhen is approved by the Ministry of Education to admit students independently, so applicants do not need to take the Unified National Graduate Entrance Examination. Students can submit applications and upload related materials via the official application system (https://pgapply.cuhk.edu.cn/).

  • Are there any restrictions on the applicant's undergraduate major?

    There is no restriction on the applicant's undergraduate majors. We welcome students with different backgrounds who are interested in economics to apply to this programme.

  • The MSc in Economics programme is a career-oriented taught master's programme, is it suitable for students who are interested in the academic study of economics to apply for this programme?

    The Master of Science in Economics programme is primarily job-oriented, but we also offer the economic science concentration for students who want to pursue a Ph.D. in economics or related business disciplines. This concentration provides a more in-depth treatments across a broad range of economic theories and emphasizes development of solid academic research abilities. Students have access to advanced doctoral courses, helping to lay a solid theoretical foundation for their future academic research. 

  • Can I still apply for admission if my English test results have not been released?

    English language results can be submitted late. For successful applicants who are unable to provide their English results at this time, a conditional offer Letter will be issued and the deadline for language submission will be indicated in the letter. 

  • What is the Medium of Instruction?

    The medium of instruction is English. However, in the case of our senior practitioners, their practical workshops will be conducted in Chinese.

  • Do I need to submit a thesis and conduct a graduation defense to graduate from this programme?

    This programme does not require submission of graduation thesis or graduation defense. Students graduate after completing 12 courses/36 credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above and meeting civic education course requirement*.

    * Civic Education Courses (not applicable to international students) are noncredit and include required courses and elective courses, subject to actual course offerings.

  • What is the review process?

    The assessment is a two-step process. Firstly, we will screen the applicant's documents, and then we will arrange individual interviews for the shortlisted applicants. The individual interview is conducted in English and takes about 15 minutes.

  • Is recommendation letter required? Any language or format requirement?

    Yes, two reference letters are required without any language and format requirements, both Chinese and English are acceptable. Applicants need to fill in the information of the referees and the system will automatically send a request email to the referees once you submit your application.
    If the referee has not received the email sent by the system due to system reasons, you can ask the referee to send the letter of recommendation (with signature) directly to msecon@cuhk.edu.cn; please remind the referee to make a note of your name and application number when sending the email.

  • When are tuition fees due?

    Tuition fees are payable in three instalments. The deadline for payment is as stated in the official acceptance letter.

  • Does the programme offer scholarships?

    There are two types of scholarships, entrance scholarship and academic excellence scholarship. 
    Merit-based entrance scholarships of as high as 100% tuition fee are granted to qualified candidates. 
    Academic Performance Scholarship is evaluated during the period of study at the Programme, and awarded to students with outstanding academic performance.
    - Subject Prize will be awarded to students with the best academic performance in each required core course.
    - Scholarship for Academic Excellence will be awarded to students who have exhibited distinguished academic performance during their study in MSc Economics Programme in CUHK-Shenzhen.

  • Do you provide opportunities to exchange studies aboard?

    Yes. All postgraduate students are able to apply to exchange programmes provided by the OAL (Overseas Academic Links) Department.  For student who wish to apply for exchange programmes, they are required to notify the programme to preserve their academic status at the school. Please visit the university official website for more information.

  • Does the tuition fee include textbook fee?

    No, students will need to buy textbooks themselves if needed.

  • Does the school arrange internships and referrals for students?

    Shenzhen Finance Institute (SFI) has set up a Career Development Centre to provide students with all-round, systematic and humanistic career guidance services. SFI has already cooperated with many famous financial institutions and enterprises at home and abroad, which will provide students with abundant internship and job opportunities. At the same time, the Master of Science in Economics programme has also set up a practitioner workshop course, inviting senior practitioners from top enterprises and institutions to participate in the teaching and guidance of students to complete practical projects, so as to build a bridge between students and the industry and cultivate students' practical application ability. These will help students to find internships and jobs in the future.
